The uproar over Robert De Niro’s presence in Zero Day is quite unfounded. Even the greatest of actors need to let their hair down once in a while. And besides, have you seen some of this all-time great actors recent films, for example War With Grandpa and About My Father?
Zero Day on Netflix is a pulpy political thriller, and De Niro playing the former president of the United States has himself a ball mowing through the massy thought luckily not messy, plot, filled with intrigue and suspense. In publishing parlance, Zero Day is quite a page-turner. Though not quite Robert Ludlum’s Bourne Identity, De Niro’s presence itself assures the series a certain amount of respectability and grace, although I didn’t see the need for the screenwriters (Noah Oppenheim & Eric Newman) to keep moving the pawns constantly to keep audiences’ interest alive.
De Niro looks every inch President material.

[This story contains major spoilers from the Zero Day finale.]
Zero Day ended with a shock when Robert De Niro’s politician did the right thing.
As a former U.S. president pulled back into politics to investigate the perpetrators of a deadly cyberattack, De Niro’s George Mullen put aside pressure from both the show’s current president (played by Angela Bassett) and his own wife Sheila Mullen, played by Joan Allen, to not tell the country the full truth of what he uncovered. That truth would be informing Americans about a homegrown attack involving Big Tech, but also elected officials like Speaker of the House Richard Dreyer, played Matthew Modine, and Mullen’s own idealistic daughter, Rep. Alexandra Mullen, played by Lizzy Caplan.
But in the end, that’s exactly what he did. He told the country the truth and faced the consequences. Mullen’s daughter turns herself in, and his wife leaves him; the...

When talking about their new Netflix limited series, the creators of Zero Day have been fielding a common question: How did you get Robert De Niro to do TV?
If you ask De Niro, it’s a simple answer.
“I didn’t have any hesitations,” he tells co-creator Eric Newman in a video interview for The Hollywood Reporter about his first small screen role (above). Not only did De Niro sign on for the lead role, he’s also an executive producer. “When we spoke and met first and [Eric Newman] came back with these episodes little by little, they were all good. I said, ‘This is good, smart.’ And the people writing it, [Newman] and everyone else, Mike Schmidt and Noah Oppenheim, you knew what you were writing about and so that was encouraging.”

In his 60+ years as an actor, De Niro boasts a filmography unlike any other in Hollywood, and even as an 81-year-old veteran of the industry, he continues to surprise the audience.

This post contains spoilers from Netflix's Zero Day episode 4 from this point forward.
It's been 19 days since the cyberattack when Zero Day episode 4 begins, and there's unfortunately been another attack, this time on the American Homestead Bank. President Mitchell addresses the nation as disgruntled customers protest outside the bank. They are unable to access their accounts, but it goes on step further. Mitchell has placed an immediate freeze on all financial activity through at least the weekend.
During the presser, Mitchell mentions that Mullen has a suspect, potentially for both events, in custody. A reporter asks if it's Evan Green, as Mullen arrested him at the end of episode 3, but she reiterates "a suspect." Dreyer pressures Mitchell to cut Mullen loose as the former president interrogates Green about Leon and Anna Sindler. Green gives him nothing but jokes and asks for a lawyer.

Watching a political thriller series in the year 2025 is admittedly a little scary, and there are a quite a bit of them currently on the airwaves. (Anyone else completely hooked on Hulu's Paradise and looking forward to season 2?) Well, another one has entered the chat thanks to Netflix's new limited series Zero Day starring Robert De Niro.
The Oscar winner plays former United States President George Mullen, and in the opening seconds of the series, we're thrust right into chaos as Mullen searches his study through notebooks and other items on his desk. He picks up a broken frame with a picture dated in April 1975. Lights are whirring, people are pounding on the door to break in, but he frantically attempts to unlock his safe.

So many TV series, limited or ‘"unlimited," are dubbed as binge-able, something the viewers can gulp quickly, often in a single go, but really have the plot, tension, or execution (or neither of those) to deserve the epithet.
Well, if you are seeking one that you can easily muster in one go (with the usual breaks), then Zero Day, the six-episode limited series starring Robert De Niro and a quite stellar cast that just started showing on Netflix is certainly the one for you. Actually, it is a worthy watch, whether you want to binge on it or not.
An intriguing (horrifying) idea is developed into a tense, gripping plot with a number of streams that, in the beginning, pose more questions with possible puzzling answers that slowly unravel with a number of surprising answers that are kept hidden almost or fully to the end.

What made “Mr. Robot” such a captivating *** drama when it aired in the mid-2010s was its incisive perspective. We followed an individual fed up with the greed of the 1%, the monopoly of corporations in American life and corruption at every level. The show had its gimmicks — twists and turns aimed to pull the rug from under the viewer, but it always felt like it had a lot to say about the status quo.
“Zero Day,” Netflix’s latest six-episode thriller, is another *** show. Rather than being immersed in the ***’s philosophy and point of view, we follow a government commission trying to get to the bottom of what happened. It is devoid of that rich point of view — the reasons for the hack, once eventually revealed, are unearned stakes deflated by an entire season of repetitive dead-end plotting and muted performances that don’t do much...

Robert De Niro stars as George Mullen, a former U.S. president who comes out of retirement to lead the investigation. During a lull in the second half of Netflix’s six-part political thriller Zero Day — and there are more lulls than there should be — I began to contemplate how much more efficiently the show’s central crisis could be resolved with the assistance of either Owen Hendricks, the protagonist of Netflix’s The Recruit, or Peter Sutherland, the protagonist of Netflix’s The Night Agent.
Netflix’s recent political thrillers have been rendered largely fungible by the streamer’s compact release schedule. The Diplomat is the best of this group, so I’m going to leave it out of the conversation. The Recruit is a goofy show, but it steers into its absurdities with reckless and fast-moving abandon that I appreciate. The Night Agent takes itself much more seriously, but creator Shawn Ryan has a tremendous internal editing mechanism that keeps the show lean and propulsive.

"Zero Day" arrives at either the best possible time or the worst. It is a paranoid political thriller for our paranoid political times; a series that bundles up hot-button issues plaguing modern American politics today and presents them in a slick, engrossing package. I suppose you could call it "timely," but the problem is that right now, as I write this review, things seem so fraught and perilous in the country that I'm not sure anyone is going to be in the mood to watch this new Netflix limited series, created by Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim, and Michael Schmidt, and featuring a cast of heavy-hitters led by Robert De Niro (in his first TV series). If you're looking for braindead escapism to take your mind off of how terrible everything is right now, "Zero Day" may not be what you're looking for. And yet, the show isn't nearly as deep...

In the Netflix political thriller Zero Day, a cyberattack shuts down America’s electronic infrastructure. The blackout lasts only one minute, but that’s enough time to leave thousands dead and the surviving millions in a state of fear. With a subsequent cyberattack looming, the government rallies an extraconstitutional task force to locate the source of the initial one. And believe it or not, the least of this terminally dull show’s problems is that the damned committee doesn’t even convene until the second episode.
The first episode is spent establishing the man placed in charge of this task force, ex-President George Mullen (Robert De Niro), who’s as reluctant as you’d hope for anyone to be when entrusted with such a degree of power. But Mullen is less a character than an idea, the fictional concept of the American president made flesh. Emerging from retirement, he makes...

Robert De Niro’s first foray into series television proved to be an endurance test for the legendary actor, who compared filming Netflix’s “Zero Day” to swimming the English Channel — with no sight of either shore.
“It is like doing three features back to back,” De Niro said at a preview event in London on Wednesday. “I was in most of it. And so I had to keep up with everything, even as simple as knowing the lines. So I likened it to being in the English channel — swimming to England from France, looking behind me and not seeing France, looking ahead, not seeing England. I gotta keep going, otherwise I’m gonna sink.”

The 2025 Academy Award nominations have been announced after delays caused by the devastating fires in Los Angeles, and the numerous nods got us thinking about how the Star Trek movies have fared at the Oscars. And the answer is… terribly. Not counting Section 31, which can be classified as a telemovie, there are 13 features spanning from The Motion Picture in 1979 to Beyond in 2016. Together, they have been nominated for a grand total of 16 Oscars, all in tech or makeup categories. And they've won exactly one Oscar. You read that right. One Oscar.
And the Oscar went to Barney Burman, Mindy Hall, and Joel Harlow, who triumphed in the Best Makeup category for their work on Star Trek (2009). Interestingly, Star Trek (2009) accounted for a full quarter of all of the Star Trek franchise’s Oscar nominations, as it was also up for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing.

Misinformation, conspiracy theories, and governmental corruption abound in the official trailer for “Zero Day.” Robert De Niro leads the Netflix series as George Mullen, a former U.S. president who is made the head of a commission tasked with tracking down the perpetrators of “Zero Day,” a devastating cyberattack responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans.
His assignment is complicated by widespread misinformation and online conspiracy theorists, as well as his own concerns about the unrestricted power he’s been given to “grab people off the streets without warrants.” Can he find justice without aiding his government in committing what has, as one character notes, the potential to be “the greatest affront to civil liberties ever attempted”?
Netflix unveiled the first, full-length trailer for “Zero Day,” which comes from co-creators Eric Newman (“Griselda”), Noah Oppenheim (“Jackie”), and Michael S. Schmidt, Wednesday morning. You can watch it below.

Robert De Niro portrays a respected former U.S. President in Netflix’s Zero Day, which released its first official trailer (above) ahead of the limited series’ release on February 20.
His character George Mullen, as head of the Zero Day Commission, is tasked with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that caused chaos around the country and thousands of fatalities. He is working on the top-secret investigation at the behest of the current Commander-in-Chief Evelyn Mitchell (Angela Bassett), a task that will force him to confront his own dark secrets while risking all he holds dear.
“If the public finds out how deep this really is, I don’t think we survive that,” President Mitchell tells Mullen in the trailer.
The limited series from co-creators and executive producers Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim and Mike Schmidt, also stars Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Joan Allen and...

As Hollywood’s one of the most versatile actors recently turned 70, it is time to consider more than the roles J.K. Simmons is best known for, like J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man or the terrifying music teacher in Whiplash. Simmons now has more than 200 films and TV appearances to his credit, building a career of supporting character work combined with memorable scenes.

Not only with his big win at the Oscars but also over the years, he has shown how he can steal any scene with his screen presence. However, under the familiar top hits, there are a number of underappreciated films that need to be appreciated more.

There was lots of great TV in 2024 even though it was kind of a weird year due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. The long-gestating Shōgun delivered and won a record 18 Emmys to boot. Hacks produced its best season yet and an Emmy shocker. X-Men ’97 was nostalgia done right. True Detective returned to form (and angered deposed creator Nic Pizzolatto) with its Night Country installment. And Baby Reindeer – which was on virtually no one’s radar at this point last year – became a surprise global smash. Those are just a few of this year’s highlights. But 2025 could be even better and bigger with new seasons of shows delayed by the strikes and some old favorites taking their final bows on the docket alongside plenty of intriguing new titles.
Here are our 25 most anticipated shows of ’25 in chronological order of release.

Mina Sundwall is only in the early stages of her career in movies and on television, but she's already accumulated a significant number of memorable and impressive performances. Born on October 23, 2001, Mina Sundwall got her career started early, appearing in an episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories at the age of 11. This was followed by a two-year gap before she earned two more roles, in A Good Marriage and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Since then, Sundwall has regularly worked in film and TV, even starring in some of her projects.
Sundwall has had what is, in comparison to other actors who debuted in the 2010s, an unusually classical path to success. With streaming services offering new movies and TV shows at an almost unsustainable rate, young actors have found themselves thrust into the spotlight after only one or two performances. Sundwall is a little different. She got her start very young,...
