“Sundance is the fucking shit. I love being here.”
So said Kristen Stewart in closing her acceptance speech Thursday night after receiving a Visionary Award from the Sundance Film Festival. It was a mic drop moment if there ever was one, and it was timed perfectly, arriving during the Sundance Institute’s fundraising gala that served as a starry kickoff for this year’s edition. The official title of the event is the Opening Night Gala: Celebrating 40 Years Presented by Chase Sapphire, and it went down at the DeJoria Center in nearby Kamas, Utah.
At 33 years old, Stewart is already a Sundance veteran who has had 10 films screen at the festival over the years, and she’s back this year with two more: Sam and Andy Zuchero’s Love Me opposite Steven Yeun, and Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding. Christopher Nolan is like “a timber wolf,” said Robert Downey Jr., Nolan’s star in “Oppenheimer.” And in a funny yet sincere speech in which Downey teased and feted Nolan at Sundance’s opening night awards gala, he hailed Nolan “as independent a voice as ever existed in cinema while telling stories that remind us of the interdependency of the human experience.”
“Now that last line was so searingly sophisticated, I’m just going to let it hang there for a second,” Downey joked. “Damn, that just came to me!”
Downey said Nolan can accomplish this because his partner Emma Thomas “blocks for him,” challenges him, and reinforces his every decision. And in presenting Nolan Sundance’s first-ever Trailblazer Award on January 18, the first night of the 40th edition of the festival in Park City, he was in awe that he could deliver a film ahead of schedule and under...

“It’s a quarter of a century later, and I’m still f*cking being discovered by Sundance,” beamed Christopher Nolan tonight at the Sundance Film Festival Opening Night Gala as he received the inaugural Trailblazer award.
“At what point do I move onto bigger things?” the acclaimed Oppenheimer filmmaker cracked.
The wrap-up remark was made as Nolan told the story about how Comcast Universal boss Brian Roberts shared the filmmaker and his producer wife Emma Thomas post Oppenheimer‘s immediate greenlight how he caught their movie Memento by chance at Sundance during a ski trip back in 2001 with the father and the impact it had on him.
Nolan says that Thomas and he were “caught in a moment of reflection.”

“Thank you for lighting a fire under my ass,” Kristen Stewart told Sundance’s Opening Night gala tonight.
“Sundance is the f*cking sh*t!” she added taking the stage to receive the Visionary Award from her co-star of 3 films, Jesse Eisenberg. The honor for is for their work as an uncompromising artist in indie film, who also has a long history with the Park City fest.
Stewart is doing double duty here at the festival, starring in the Sam and Andy Zuchero acquistion title, Love Me, and A24’s Rose Glass directed genre title Love Lies Bleeding.
Eisenberg spoke about how he was struck by the emotion she brought to what was a brief driving scene in which he had one line, and she was all face on the set of Greg Mottola’s Adventureland. Eisenberg and Stewart also starred in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society and the action movie American Ultra.

Kristen Stewart is being honored with the visionary award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival opening night gala, a prize that is a bit unusual for the actor to accept. Speaking to Variety‘s Angelique Jackson, Stewart said her job is to serve the vision of filmmakers and not to always have her own sense of vision.
“When I saw that I was being given the visionary award I was like, ‘What a word!'” Stewart said during Variety On The Carpet, presented by Directv. “As an actor, you’re not often glorified for your vision. You fit into other people’s visions and service their efforts and their endeavors and the messages they want to get across.”
“Actors feel like little soldiers for other people’s causes,” she continued. “Coming to this festival and continuing that march, it’s a truly…it’s the apex of where you want to get.

After 10 years running the Sundance Institute, CEO Keri Putnam told her staff and the Board of Trustees that she will step down later this year.
In an interview this week, Putnam said the decision was her own and that she had been mulling a departure in recent years, particularly in the wake of long-time Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper’s exit in 2019 and hiring his replacement, Tabitha Jackson. However, she wanted to remain involved with the festival through the 2021 pandemic edition, and its conclusion struck her as a logical time to exit.
“Once the pandemic hit, it was obvious that I was going to stay with the organization to help onboard with Tabitha and the team for this challenging year,” Putnam said. “Having come through that in ways we all were really proud of, it just felt like a natural moment of closure for me to let the incredible team move forward.

Keri Putnam, CEO of the Sundance Institute, will step down from her role later this year after more than 10 years with the arts non-profit.
Putnam this week informed staff and the Board of Trustees of her decision. She will remain in the role through the end of the fiscal year. Board of Trustees chair Pat Mitchell and vice-chair Ebs Burnough will co-chair a search committee to find Putnam’s replacement.
Under Putnam’s leadership, Sundance hosted its first ever virtual festival earlier this year, and she also led the non-profit in growth as well as the launch of new programs to support artists seeking production, financing and distribution, including Sundance Catalyst, which raised $40 million in equity and grant investment over the past eight years for a wide variety of independent projects.

A new report by the Women’s Media Center found that only 30% of all non-acting Oscar nominations went to women this year – up from 25% the year before. Of the 186 total nominees in those categories, 56 are women, 130 are men.
“The number of nominations for women increased in the 92nd Academy Awards, but not by much,” according to a Women’s Media Center analysis of the Oscars’ 19 non-acting categories, ahead of Sunday’s 92nd Academy Awards. “The overall percentage of female nominees in those categories rose by just 5 percentage points, from 25 percent last year to 30 percent this year, compared to 70 percent for male nominees.”
Last year’s report found that 51 of the 207 non-acting nominees were women, and that 156 were men – a larger pool of nominees in which fewer women were nominated than this year. This year’s report found “little progress for women in non-acting Oscar nominations,” and that 30% remains “a long way from gender parity.

We are unequivocally united in supporting the survivors in the film and all survivors of Russell Simmons. We want them to know: We believe you. We hear you. You deserve to be seen. #MeToo”
Other signers include Alysia Reiner, Evan Rachel Wood, Frances Fisher, Gina Belafonte, Gloria Steinem, Marisa Tomei and Thandie Newton.
