Today, Frictional Games are known as masters of horror, but in 2006, they were a group of university students at work on their thesis. The project in question? A propitiatory game engine with advanced lighting, physics and bloom. To show off their tech, they bolted on a short playable demo and named it Penumbra. Beautiful but eerie, Penumbra showed promise and a full game was commissioned with a second episode to follow a year later. Then, in 2010, Frictional’s place in the contemporary consciousness was assured thanks to a Gothic horror title set in a haunted mansion in the classic style of Lovecraft. Its name was Amensia: The Dark Descent.

It was July 4th 1985. While the annual Independence Day block party raged, full of worthy distractions for a young lad, I was more concerned with what the older kids were doing, the gaggle of cousins and my brother, to old and cool to be seen in the daylight. I found them crowded on and around my aunt and uncle’s sofa in the darkened living room. Their eyes wide and unblinking in concentration on the television screen.
As the film churned with the muted pulse of the DJ thumping from outside I soon came face to face with the monster that would haunt my dreams and symbolize all of my fears and insecurities throughout my developmental years and deep into my 20’s.
The movie was A Nightmare on Elm St. and like most kids at that age, I discovered within it something primal that reached out from the dark and touched me.

Microsoft's debut games console, the Xbox, made a big impact on gaming, but not all of its games got the attention they deserved...

The new generation console war may turning towads a two horse race, with Nintendo playing catch up, but wind back a few years, and Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo were all hard at it, competing for your money and loyalty. The PlayStation 2 would go on to win the war of its generation, but Microsoft's Xbox was a tough competitor, giving the company a secure foothold, which it would later take advantage of in the next generation with the Xbox 360's dominance.
The original Xbox had a host of great games, many of which have gone on to become successful franchises, with no better example than Halo, but not all of its good games gained the attention they deserved, even if sequels managed to appear in later years.

There are two very broad, distinct, and (fine) obvious types of horror stories being told in the new indie thriller from After Dark Films (Originals). In one corner we have the "happy family in a creepy house they just bought to get away from the city" stuff and in the other is the "evil female specter who may or may not be real but definitely seems to covet the couple's infant" material. Adding to the patchwork feel of the premise are some touches, characters, and ideas that are inspired by a wide array of recent (mostly indie or foreign) supernatural thrillers...
In other words, Dark Circles will be thoroughly familiar (perhaps even predictable) to anyone who watches a lot of horror movies, but that's not to say you won't find some creepy moments and worthwhile assets scattered across the flick. For example, writer/director Paul Soter seems to actually care about his central characters.

I love the people I play video games with. After years and years of Xboxlive I have struck a healthy mix of real life buddies and online acquaintances. A motley crew of obsessives, casuals, trolls and bros. Usually everyone gets along, but the one thing we can never all agree on is achievements. Some of my buddies hate them. They feel that they do nothing but cause pain and misery for perfectionist types and serve no purpose other than to keep you playing shitty games. Others enjoy the thrill of the hunt, going on sites like Trueachievements and finding ways to subvert the games in order to rack up huge numbers. Others simply don’t care, and just want to play video games. But whether you like them or not, achievements, trophies and in-game collectibles are here to stay. But before I try to sell you on achievements, I want...

Long time readers of the site will have seen this before as I’m reposting my love letter to Stephen Volk’s Ghostwatch on the occasion of Hallowe’en. A year shy of its twentieth anniversary it remains a landmark of paranormal drama and has just been reissued on DVD at a ridiculously low price.
Things have changed since the initial (and only) BBC broadcast. Reality TV has infected almost every aspect of television and Most Haunted and the recent Paranormal Activity films simply would not exist without it. Familiarity with the presenters may have made he suspension of disbelief a little difficult initially but nineteen years on there is no such problem.
Ghostwatch joins The War Game, Orson Welles’ Hallowe’en broadcast of War of the Worlds, and the Us TV programmes Special Bulletin and Without Warning as moments in broadcast history which signalled a shift in what was possible,...

From the fascinating-yet-creepy files, a British firm has unveiled a backpack-mounted radar that allows users to see through walls. Users place their backs toward a wall or a building and are instantly given intelligence on the locations and movements of anyone behind the wall. Results are transmitted to a user's handheld device.
According to the Prism's makers, Cambridge Consultants, the device was “developed for high-risk and hostile situations with minimal time and very narrow margin for error.”

Lots of horror fans dug director Tom Shankland’s The Children, a dark bad seed film from Ghost House’s banner label in 2008. A Bigger Boat and GreenStreet Films announced today (via Styd) that the director has signed onto Dark Corners, a thriller the producers describe as “a cat-n-mouse thriller in the spirit of Wait Until Dar’ and Panic Room, that gives you someone to root for, someone to fear and something going bump in the night.”
Here’s the plot: “Revolves around Jess, a beautiful blind college girl who is tormented by a methodical killer who knows her well, and therefore knows what terrifies her. He is motivated by sadistic revenge, but she turns her apparent weakness into a strength and fights back.”...

Susanna Lo is taking over the writing and directing of the long-talked-about Manson Girls movie.
Beginning in February 2011, acclaimed filmmaker Susanna Lo (Black & White: A Love Story) is the new director of the weird, once-starring-Lindsay-Lohan, now-starring-Thora Birch movie about the women of the Manson Family aptly entitled The Manson Girls, taking over from Matthew Bright. Bd yesterday reported that one of our faves, Thora Birch, will be cast in the crazy bitch's stead as Nancy Pitman, a wealthy gal from Malibu who was caught smuggling LSD to Manson in jail in 1970. Also known as Brenda McCann and Brindle, she served three years for the James and Lauren Willett *** conspiracy and later joined the Aryan Brotherhood.

With QuakeCon 2010 going on in Dallas this week, Steam decided to package together a huge downloadable crate of classics $69.99. If you've been around long enough to play through everything on the list, from "Commander Keen" to "Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition," chances are that a few of them have fallen victim to scratched CD's, mysterious moving disappearances or in at least one or two cases the obsolete status of the floppy disk.
"Fallout 3" really hold the value of the deal together, but on a normal day all of these titles would run you just over $300 on Steam, so if you have the time and desire to play through some milestones from Fps history, here's what your $69.99 will get you:
• "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth"
• "Commander Keen"
• "Doom 3"
• "Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil"
• "Doom 2"
• "Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition"
• "Final Doom"

Josh Payne, one of the three teenaged stars of the violent Australian thriller Acolytes (now on DVD from Anchor Bay), likens the movie to Wolf Creek—a film he isn’t legally able to see in Australia at this point. But Acolytes (see the first part of this set report here) does indeed spin off from an equally disturbing premise: a trio of teens discover a dead body in the woods and, instead of reporting it, choose to find the responsible party and blackmail him into offing one of their enemies.
“Parents will be freaked by Acolytes because we’re only kids,” says Payne, whose onscreen mates are portrayed by Sebastian Gregory and Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, “but that’s the reason a lot of teens will be able to relate to it.” And he wants it known that he put a lot of effort into his final scene: “Against all advice,...

Epic Games has revealed details about the forthcoming Gears of War 2 main campaign expansion Dark Corners. Earlier this year, the developer announced the addition as part of the title's downloadable content, which will offer seven completely new multiplayer maps, as well as a mission deleted from the main game. Speaking on Major Nelson's podcast, designer Cliff Bleszinski said: "It's a 90 minute section that was actually snipped out of Gears of War 2, where Marcus and Dom are actually going to the Locust home world and they're basically suited up in Locust armour and have a choice - because they knocked out a couple of Therons - they can go in guns blazing as they always do, Rambo-style, or they can go with a more stealth approach, so it's a little bit of stealth in the Gears universe. "You get Achievements for playing (more)...

Shoreline Entertainment has teamed with German film scout and finance specialist Bjorn Puckler to create Shoreline Management, which will specialize in offering English-speaking writers and directors to foreign producers.
Puckler will supervise daily operations of the unit and oversee deals negotiated between individuals and companies in the U.S. and abroad.
"There are many international production companies producing English-language films that require English-speaking writers and directors," Shoreline Entertainment chief Morris Ruskin said. "Shoreline Management is determined to fill that need."
The company also will work on a nonexclusive basis to guide regional and international talent into regional and Hollywood projects, officials said.
Initial clients at Shoreline Management include writer-director Jim Kouf, whose screenplay credits include "Rush Hour" and the "National Treasure" films. British writer-director Ray Gower ("Dark Corners") and multihyphenate Peter Koller ("On Evil Grounds") also have signed up for representation.

Peter Block, former president of acquisitions and co-producer at Lionsgate, has set off on his own with a brand-new company called A Bigger Boat, securing distribution deals with Overture in North America and Alliance in the UK, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia, according to Variety.
Block’s intention is to shoot genre films, our genre of course not the romantic comedy genre, which will cost between $10 and $25 million. First on the slate are a thriller from John Carpenter (perhaps L.A. Gothic?) and Dark Corners, which was penned by Home Sick, Autopsy and Pop Skull writer/producer E.L. Katz.
