Patsy Kensit, she always marries a popstar takes a lookback at 1986. Although she was a child star appearing in a movie with Robert Redford in 1974, she was groomed for stardom in Absolute Beginners.
Unfortunately the film flopped despite Patsy saying it was the biggest movie of the year. It was the most hyped film of 1986 but it was mauled by the critics.
The theme song from David Bowie was good though.
It was an era where yuppies were in full swing and music looked back to the 1950s and 1960s thanks to the advertising men. Nick Kamen a model became a star washing his Levis in a laundry. He sent the sales of boxer shorts through the roof.
Kamen went on to get a hit pop single but 1986 was a year of the power ballads. Peter Cetera with the theme for Karate Kid Part II, Mister Mister, Berlin, Europe, Cutting Crew and Jennifer Rush are just a few of the acts who rode high on the charts with anthemic songs that you needed a lighter for.
Paul Hogan who was known as a sub Benny Hill sketch show comedian on Australian television became a film star thanks to Crocodile Dundee. It was such a colossus financial hit that people who invested in the movie as a tax loss loophole ended up paying more tax instead.
Patsy skirts over the issues of the perils of marrying a popstar and the Chernobyl disaster of that year.
