If the precipitous rise of Tommy Shelby from low-life gangster to the seat of Parliament wasn't already proof enough, then the trajectory of "Peaky Blinders" itself is only adding further fuel to the fire of the bizarre times we live in these days. The line between television and movies was already blurring, but the acclaimed BBC series (which ultimately moved over to Netflix) isn't finished changing the game just yet. Ever since the criminal enterprise of the Shelby Company Limited concluded with its sixth and final season, fans have been looking forward to any and all developments regarding the planned "Peaky Blinders" movie that is curently in the middle of development. Now, we've received our most exciting update yet -- and one that firmly establishes the upcoming spinoff film as a can't-miss cinematic event.

Prolific writer/producer/director Steven Knight habitually turns historical grit into must-watch television. From the streets of 1920s Birmingham in “Peaky Blinders” to the daring real-life Sas soldiers of “Rogue Heroes,” Knight’s work thrives on characters who push against the limits of their status. His latest series, “A Thousand Blows,” is no different. Set in post-industrial revolution London, the show follows best friends Hezekiah and Alec as they get swept into the city’s brutal underground boxing scene while crossing paths with local legends and the notorious all-female gang, The Forty Elephants.

Between writing for “Star Wars,” his new crime series show “A Thousand Blows” on Hulu, and a host of other gigs, writer/director/creator Steven Knight is keeping extremely busy. And one project near and dear to his heart he hasn’t abandoned is the Irish crime series, “Peaky Blinders,” starring Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer“).
“Peaky Blinders” came to an end with season six, obviously, but the next move is a movie for Netflix that may arrive later this year.

Filmmaker Steven Knight shows no signs of slowing down. The creator of the hailed crime series, “Peaky Blinders,” Knight is both an in-demand writer and director and often both (see “Locke” and “Serenity”). Fresh off the “Peaky Blinders” movie, which finished filming earlier this year (which may be called “The Immortal Man”), Knight’s latest creation is the genre hybrid series, “A Thousand Blows.

A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is in the works, with writer Steven Knight taking on the challenging task of adapting the iconic 1958 psychological thriller. Many film lovers regard the original as one of the greatest movies ever made, and it’s often seen as untouchable, leaving little room for a successful remake.
However, Knight, best known for creating Peaky Blinders, is diving in with the goal of bringing it to a new generation.
Knight admitted that adapting Vertigo is no easy feat. In an interview promoting his latest series A Thousand Blows, he referred to himself as ‘an idiot’ for trying to take on the project.

There’s a moment halfway through Season 1 of Steven Knight’s East End caper “A Thousand Blows” where criminal mastermind Mary Carr (Erin Doherty) takes rising boxer Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) for a posh night out; she does this ostensibly to introduce him to a promoter (Ziggy Heath) who can get Hez into more society-friendly exhibitions — colorful belts and boxing gloves are just now replacing bare-knuckle brawls at the start of this Hulu series — in exchange for his help in pulling off a heist. Also to flirt a bit.
What convinces the Jamaican transplant, though, is seeing a performer (Jessica Reeve) do a trapeze act and cast the whole room under her spell. Dressed all in silver like a cross between a heron and a Greek goddess, she has power over everyone else at that moment, and her skin color isn’t something the English are looking down on but looking up at.

Hulu’s new boxing series A Thousand Blows blew in to town last week and knocked us out like a bunch of amateur bystanders, then it left us hanging off a huge narrative cliff with a "to be continued" at the end of episode 6, thirsting for more.

If you were ever wondering what a blank check earned off the success of a show as popular as "Peaky Blinders" can buy you, the answer is a new streaming series as thrilling and well-crafted as "A Thousand Blows." Creator Steven Knight, the prodigious screenwriter behind movies such as "Locke," "Spencer," and the recent biopic "Maria," could've gone in any number of directions after crafting the Cillian Murphy-starring story about a gang of criminals making their way up from the slums of Birmingham to the very seat of power in early 1900s England. The fact that he chose to stay in roughly the same lane, this time set in 1880s London and following a gang of female thieves crossing paths with a pair of aspiring boxers from Jamaica, is precisely what makes this next effort so intriguing to watch. Write what you know, the old adage goes, and Knight...

Netflix’s Adolescence is a crime thriller of extraordinary power and rare insight, transforming into something completely unexpected by the final moments of its heartbreaking finale. The scene, anchored by a towering performance of vulnerability from the great Stephen Graham, hits with the force of a wrecking ball, leaving you shattered.
Yet, somehow, the sequence manages to piece the viewer back together. Graham, simply put, is a revelation. He is outstanding in this year’s Hulu series A Thousand Blows, embodying a powder keg of intensity — wavering between rage and tenderness — yet deeply wounded and achingly human.
I’m confident you won’t see a better performance all year.

Having stepped into the ring to deliver a knockout performance as bulked-up brawler Sugar Goodson in Disney+ period piece A Thousand Blows already this year, British acting heavyweight Stephen Graham is set to face an intense fight of an altogether different kind in upcoming Netflix drama Adolescence. Co-created and written by Graham and This Is England series writer Jack Thorne, Adolescence sees Graham reteam with Boiling Point director Philip Barantini and A Thousand Blows co-star Erin Doherty to tell a one-shot, real-time story about a family whose lives come undone when their teenage son is arrested on suspicion of murdering a girl at his school. Hulu snuck up on us last week and, without warning, dropped a gem of a gritty period drama that sucked us right into its story of ambition, violence, and desire. Created by Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders notoriety, A Thousand Blows is a gritty, bloody boxing drama set in mid-1800’s London. But that’s not all. The boxing is just a distraction—albeit a delicious one—from what’s really going on here: a group of outsiders (lower class) first demanding more than society is willing to give them, then downright taking it when they're denied. This is one irresistible, binge-worthy series you should absolutely watch.
Inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal East End of London in the 1880s, A Thousand Blows casts a spotlight on a very different gang than those Knight introduced us to in Peaky Blinders.

Things come to a heated conclusion as Hezekiah recovers from a personal loss as the biggest match of his life approaches. Here’s our review of A Thousand Blows episode 6.
Things certainly took a turn at the end of A Thousand Blows episode 5. Hezekiah’s best friend Alec was mistaken for Hezekiah and brutally stabbed by the Elephant Boys as a way to send Mary a message. Not to mention, Sugar beat up his brother Treacle so badly it was hard to tell whether the man was dead or alive.
Episode 6, the grand finale of A Thousand Blows, deals with the immediate aftermath of Alec’s death. Hezekiah, still a bit of an outsider in London, is now alone, completely submerged in his grief over losing his best friend, his brother. There’s no good time to lose someone you love, but Hezekiah is so close to reaching his dreams.

Mary faces a problem while Hezekiah finds success in A Thousand Blows episode 5. Here’s our review.
Things finally got moving in episode 4, which was by far the strongest of A Thousand Blows, Steven Knight’s Disney+ drama series. With only two more rounds to go, though, A Thousand Blows faced an uphill battle of going from good to great, from forgettable to memorable – and dear reader, it looks like we’re on the right track.
After robbing all the silver given to the Chinese Emperor, Mary (Erin Doherty) should be on top of the world. Except it’s not silver, just silver-plated, and the gang went through all that trouble for nothing. Not to mention, they got Mr Lao involved and he ended up killing one of the delegates who was responsible for the death of his family, forcing him to go into hiding. In retrospect, the whole night...

Hulu’s new drama series, A Thousand Blows, has captivated audiences with its portrayal of two Jamaican friends navigating the perilous world of Victorian London’s bare-knuckle boxing scene. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the renewal of A Thousand Blows for a second season.
What is A Thousand Blows About?
A Thousand Blows centers on Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), best friends who migrate from Jamaica to England. Upon arrival, they find themselves entangled in the violent underworld of Victorian London’s East End, particularly within the thriving bare-knuckle boxing community. Hezekiah’s rising fame catches the attention of crime syndicate leader Mary Carr (Erin Doherty), who seeks to exploit his talents for her own illicit purposes. The series delves into themes of friendship, survival, and the clash between old and new worlds.

When it comes to British historical dramas, very few can be said to have matched the popularity attained by Peaky Blinders, so it’s understandable why fans were excited for series creator Steven Knight’s latest venture, A Thousand Blows. Set in the underworld of late 19th century London, the six-episode series focuses on the real-life all-female thieves gang, The Forty Elephants, and highlights the transition period of boxing. A Thousand Blows is engaging enough to keep its viewers hooked throughout, and aside from a solid script and the authentic recreation of historical settings, a colorful ensemble of characters proved to be the major reason behind that. With a second season already greenlit, there is a possibility of the series gaining a cult following in the near future, and the continuation of a proper arc of the players involved will be something to look forward to.

The plot thickens as Steven Knight’s new series hits its midpoint. Here’s our A Thousand Blows episode 3 review.
A Thousand Blows, the latest period drama from Steven Knight, hits its halfway point with episode 3. We’re now well into the adventures of Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), Sugar (Stephen Graham) and Mary (Erin Doherty), all of whom are fighting for survival in the brutal East End of London.
The episode starts with a bang as a bomb goes off in Greenwich. Episode 3 is by Coky Giedroyc, a director we’re very fond of. We even put one of her films, Greatest Days, on the cover of Film Stories magazine. Her perspective is welcome in an episode that largely focuses on Mary’s plans and her past.
Much of A Thousand Blows has focused on boxing, as the name might imply. In Episode 2, Mary unceremoniously broke Hezekiah’s hand, forcing him...

A Thousand Blows is a 2025 drama series streaming on Hulu and Hotstar globally that was essentially born out of the concept of creating a show based on boxing in the UK during the latter half of the 1800s. It is this very premise that the plot follows here, as a Jamaican man named Hezekiah Moscow emigrates to London in search of a better life and finds a new career in the emerging sport of boxing. But fairly early into his time in the fast and busy city, Hezekiah gets introduced to the Forty Elephants, a women-only group of tricksters, scamsters, and petty thieves. With a solid plot at its center, and thoroughly entertaining production, A Thousand Blows season 1 makes for a fun watch, while also leaving us with a short tease of season 2, which is already in the works.

I personally do not mind directors taking creative liberties if they make the conflicts more engrossing and the narrative more captivating. A Thousand Blows, the six-part series, is answered by real-life people who lived in London’s east end around the 1800s. That said, a chunk of the events shown in Steven Knight’s historical sports drama are entirely fictional just like his previous drama Rogue Heroes, which too was based on a true-ish story. And maybe the main reason behind such an approach is that there is negligible information available about these characters. With that said, the creators have used whatever information they could get and then weaved fictional narrative around it for entertainment purposes. So, let’s take a look at the factual accuracy and inconsistencies in A Thousand Blows TV show and how the creators have twisted a few timelines to dramatize the events.

Sugar and Hezekiah meet in the ring for a brutal boxing match. Here’s our A Thousand Blows episode 2 review.
Warning! These reviews are spoiler-free for the episode in question but will discuss previous episodes in detail.
It’s difficult to start an episode of TV with a bang these days. Most chapters of any given series end on a cliffhanger, a major revelation that guarantees the audience will tune in next week. Of course, there’s no such problem when you release all your episodes in one go, like A Thousand Blows.
That being said, episode 1 of the new Disney+ series did end on a minor cliffhanger as Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) got in the ring with Stephen Graham’s Sugar, but we were denied the pleasure of watching the two fight. Thankfully, episode 2 gives us that fight and then some.

The second (possibly final) season of 1923 remains cinematic. It has honest-to-God star power—not only because the series features Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, but also because Brandon Sklenar, after a successful summer with It Ends With Us, has now taken the reins as a full-fledged movie star on your streaming screen.
Sklenar commands your attention with the charisma and magnetism of a young Harrison Ford. You simply cannot take your eyes off him. And with rumors of 1923 coming to a close this season, Paramount+ would be smart to lock in a third, giving Sklenar full studio backing to take the Yellowstone chapter into the future.

After six seasons, Peaky Blinders came to an end in 2022, but we will soon see Cillian Murphy reprise his role as Thomas Shelby in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie. While speaking to BBC Breakfast, creator Steven Knight says that although the movie will provide “a very fitting way to end this part of the Peaky story,” the franchise isn’t over yet.
“It’s not over, let’s just put it like that,” Knight said. “I’m not allowed to announce it… but I’m just saying that the world of Peaky will continue.” Production wrapped up in December, and Knight teased that what he’s seen so far is fantastic. “The stuff that I’m watching, the rushes… no-one will be disappointed,” he said. “It is quite an incredible thing… I think we’ve got the best British actors all in one place.“

Several great stories about the underbelly of Victorian London get smushed together to yield something less great but often extremely entertaining in Steven Knight’s new Hulu drama, A Thousand Blows.
Knight comes off less like a master storyteller here than a highly enthusiastic autodidact learning new things and then flailing a bit in making connections. That just means that, at its worst, A Thousand Blows — which caps these first six episodes with a “To Be Continued” title card and clips from additional upcoming episodes — will send interested observers online in search of the true stories about all-female criminal gangs, nascent gloved boxing and 19th-century concert hall performers.
So you’ve got well-acted, well-produced, genre-bending period television and an inspiration to do further research? You could do far worse, and the wildly prolific Knight — he of Peaky Blinders, The Veil and All the Light We Cannot See — has done both better and worse.

Some genres and topics have been stalwarts of film and television for decades. Boxing is one, and period dramas are another. Blending both worlds in a fascinating tale inspired by a true story, A Thousand Blows is the latest series from prolific writer Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders. Using historical figures and their true story, A Thousand Blows fictionalizes the world of Victorian England and the bare-knuckled brawlers at the center of it.
A Thousand Blows follows Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), two best friends from Jamaica who travel to London to seek a new and better life. Finding themselves in the violent area of London’s West End, the pair come across Mary Carr (Erin Doherty), the leader of the all-female criminals known as the Forty Elephants. They also meet Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham), the most notorious boxer in London. As they clash in various ways,...

On the heels of Steven Knight‘s new period drama “A Thousand Blows,” the creator of “Peaky Blinders” is coyly teasing that the British crime franchise “will continue” beyond an upcoming feature film for Netflix and BBC Films that sees star Cillian Murphy reprise his iconic role of Tommy Shelby, leader of an infamous criminal syndicate, that project set during the events of WWII wrapped production back in December.

A feature-length Peaky Blinders film is due to hit screens later this year – but a new interview suggests it might not be the end we expected…
When a beloved TV programme makes the jump to the big screen (metaphorical or otherwise), it usually means the creatives behind it want a larger, more flexible platform to finish their story off. That, or the cast of your favourite sitcom fancy a free trip to the Algarve.
But speaking to BBC Breakfast this morning, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has suggested the upcoming film in his Brummie bad-lad universe likely won’t be the last we’ve seen of the Shelby clan and their many friends/violent enemies.
“I would say this, wouldn’t I, but it’s fantastic,” Knight told the BBC about the early rushes he’d seen of the film, describing it as “a very fitting way to end this...

With a title as eye-catching as “A Thousand Blows,” one can only imagine the premise of the newest series from both Hulu and “Peaky Blinders” mastermind Steven Knight. A helium balloon-inflating contest may come to mind, but where Knight may have left money on the table by disregarding such a tantalizing premise instead sees the small & large screen veteran turn his focus back towards a similar setting as the early-20th century British locale of ‘Blinders,’ again taking inspiration from a real-life group of lowlifes interspersed with fictional plotlines covering the likes of immigration, culture shock and (checks notes) underground, bare-knuckle boxing.

“Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight is not done with his hit creation yet.
Speaking on the “BBC Breakfast” show on Tuesday, Knight said that the highly anticipated Netflix feature film continuation of the hit series has wrapped filming and is shaping up to be a fitting sendoff – though he hinted the story is far from over.
Knight confirmed that production on the film concluded on Dec. 13. “We’re putting it together now,” he said. “I would say this, wouldn’t I? But it’s fantastic. We’ve got the best, I think, the best British actors all in one place, including Stephen [Graham].”
He revealed that early footage has been promising. “The stuff that I’m watching – the rushes, the assemblies – no one will be disappointed. It is quite an incredible thing,” he said. “It’s a very fitting way to end this part of the ‘Peaky’ story.”
However, Knight left the door open for more.

A Thousand Blows, Steven Knight’s companion piece to his masterwork Peaky Blinders, is a walk on the wild side. Yes, this series would make Nelson Algren proud — full of gritty realism, drifters, grifters, and outcasts looking to bruise, rip, and bleed their knuckles apart to get their piece of the pie.
A Thousand Blows is a gripping piece of work that focuses on those who fight to survive upon arriving on London’s mean streets, all while navigating life in the underbelly of society. All of this is brought to life by three standout performances: a brooding Stephen Graham, a magnetic Malachi Kirby, and an Emmy-worthy Erin Doherty.
Knight’s series is a walk worth taking.

Steven Knight certainly knows his way around a captivating historical drama. Hot on the heels of Sas: Rogue Heroes and almost three years since Peaky Blinders ended on the small screen, the Brummie writer is back with another excellent British series, once again based on fascinating real-life characters and settings. But while the big draw is undoubtedly Boiling Point and This Is England icon Stephen Graham’s transformation into a bulky bare-knuckle boxer, Knight also lays the foundations for an engaging larger ensemble.
Elements that are synonymous with Knight’s previous shows are here in abundance. There are plenty of gripping developments amongst the numerous schemes and deadly rivalries, along with a Peaky Blinders-esque family pub. Strong social and political commentary is also woven throughout, with a marked divide between the East End’s struggling working class and the aristocracy of the West End.

Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows often calls to mind HBO’s Warrior. They both take place in an inner-city slum at the end of the 19th century, though here its Victorian London rather than San Francisco. And both follow a newly arrived immigrant, in this case Jamaican boxer Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), as he contends with discrimination, inequality, and criminality in his new home, often resulting in hand-to-hand combat. But while they may share a similar style, a combination of lackluster fight scenes and thin characterization ensures that A Thousand Blows never quite makes it into Warrior’s weight class.
Upon arriving in London, Hezekiah quickly finds himself drawn into the world of underground boxing, a sinister realm presided over by brothers Treacle Goodson (James Nelson Joyce) and Sugar (Stephen Graham). Before he knows it, he’s embroiled in a bitter blood feud with Sugar and recruited by criminal queenpin...

For a short month, February has never pulled its punches.
While our friends on IndieWire’s film team prepare for the Oscars, the month kicks off with the Grammy Awards on February 2, every year’s biggest TV and music crossover. It’s also host to one of the biggest TV events of the decade if not the century: the “Saturday Night Live” fiftieth anniversary celebration, a star-studded tribute to a storied institution (catch up on “SNL50” on Peacock!).
February is a big month for Netflix, starting with the Kaitlyn-Dever led “Apple Cider Vinegar,” a delicious story of social media fraud in set in the infancy of Instagram. That would be a heavy hitter in any month, but the streamer keeps going; with “Zero Day”, then with “Running Point” from executive producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen.
Speaking of punches, this month marks the return of “Peaky Blinders” creator...

Actor and rapper Ashley Walters of Top Boy fame is making his feature directorial debut with Animol which has just gone into production. More on that below.
If you’ve watched Top Boy, Channel 4 and later Netflix’s hit London-set drama, you know Ashley Walters is the real deal. Walters’ raw performance as the series’ main character Dushane is a memorable one, but the actor and rapper is now looking to shift his focus elsewhere, specifically behind the camera.
Word has reached the Film Stories news desk that Walters’ feature directorial debut Animol has just gone into production. Written by Nick Love and drawing from Walters’ own experiences, Animol takes us inside the harsh conditions of a Young Offenders’ Institution. Tut Nyuot and Vladyslav Baliuk will play two teenagers at the heart of the story with Stephen Graham and Sharon Duncan-Brewster joining them in supporting roles.
This isn’t Walters’ first time directing.
