Dexter: Resurrection continues filming in New York City and that means more cast announcements are on the way! Variety has confirmed that How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel series.

Resurrection will pick up where Dexter: New Blood left off. If you're struggling to keep up with all of the various Dexter projects, I'll break it down for you. The parent series, Dexter, spawned New Blood as a follow-up and Resurrection takes place after that. There's also a prequel series titled Dexter: Original Sin that follows a young Dexter as he becomes the avenging serial killer we later know him as.

Additionally, another Dexter prequel series is in development centered on John Lithgow's antagonistic character Arthur Mitchell, also known as the Trinity Killer.

Fans took this as an indication that she would be reprising her role of Jessica Jones for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is due to kick off production tomorrow. Dexter: Resurrection's first set photo has been shared, confirming that filming on the sequel series is underway. Created by Clyde Phillips, the world of Dexter seemingly came to an end in 2022 with the New Blood finale, which sees Michael C. Hall's beloved serial killer seemingly dying at the hands of his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). Now, there's plenty more of the franchise on the horizon, with new episodes of the Dexter: Original Sin prequel show continuing to air, and Dexter: Resurrection set to release in summer 2025.

In a now-deleted Instagram post on January 9, 2025, director Marcos Siega reveals that Dexter: Resurrection has started filming. The ever-expanding Dexter franchise is bringing James Remar and David Zayas back into the fold with Dexter: Resurrection. Remar will reprise his role as Dexter’s deceased dad and mentor, Harry. Zayas returns as Detective Angel Batista, a character he played in nearly 100 episodes of the original series.

Michael C. Hall leads the cast as serial killer Dexter Morgan, and Jack Alcott’s back as his son, Harrison, a role he played in Dexter: New Blood. Clyde Phillips guides the series as showrunner. Phillips also serves as an executive producer along with Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds (Jessica Jones), Tony Hernandez (Emily in Paris), and Lilly Burns (Russian Doll).

Marcos Siega (Dexter: New Blood) is involved as a producing director. The latest addition to the franchise is produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios.

Filming is expected to get underway this month, with Paramount+ with Showtime targeting a summer 2025 premiere.

The next Dexter spinoff is filling in its ranks with familiar faces.

David Zayas, James Remar and Jack Alcott will all be joining Michael C. Hall in Dexter: Resurrection, the next spinoff in the Paramount+ with Showtime franchise that will be releasing this summer.

Dexter: Resurrection will star Michael C. Hall, who originated the titular serial killer character of Dexter Morgan in the iconic Showtime series.

Zayas played Detective Angel Batista, friend and coworker to Dexter, and James Remar played his deceased father Harry Morgan in the original series that ran for eight seasons and ended in 2013. Alcott then played Dexter’s son, Harrison Morgan, in the 2021 Dexter revival series, Dexter: New Blood.

The currently airing prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, resurrected Hall as Dexter in the season opener. It was known that Hall would narrate Original Sin, but not until the series premiered in December did the Dexter audience understand how everything would connect.

“Dexter: Resurrection” is bringing three franchise veterans into the fold.

David Zayas, James Remar, and Jack Alcott have all been cast in series regular roles in the upcoming Paramount+ with Showtime drama. They will now appear alongside Michael C. Hall, who will reprise the role of Dexter Morgan.

Zayas will once again play Det. Angel Batista, while Remar will play Harry Morgan, the roles they played in the original “Dexter.” Alcott will play Harrison Morgan, Dexter’s son, who first appeared in the sequel series “Dexter: New Blood” in 2021.

Production on “Dexter: Resurrection” is set to begin in January with a planned debut in the summer. No specific plot details are available for “Resurrection,” but the series will serve as a direct followup to “New Blood.”

In addition to his role in “Dexter,” Remar is known for his work in shows like “*** and the City” and “City on a Hill.

Dexter: Resurrection gets a new update, revealing that two more original stars will be returning. Although Dexter: New Blood was originally positioned as the end for Michael C. Hall's beloved serial killer, it was announced after the finale that this franchise isn't quite done yet. After multiple seasons spanning several years, most shows accidentally change something that was previously established at least once. Showtime wasted no time greenlighting Dexter: Original Sin after New Blood’s record-breaking finale. While fans were shocked by Dexter’s end, the network acted quickly, opting for a prequel instead of a direct sequel. How’s that for timing?

Showrunner Clyde Phillips was all set to dive into a sequel. “We wrote all 10 episodes of the sequel,” Phillips revealed, adding that things got a little wild when MTV Entertainment’s Chris McCarthy came on board. McCarthy, fresh off the success of Yellowstone’s prequels, wasn’t into sequels. He wanted Original Sin. He told Phillips, “I’m not in the sequel business; I’m in the prequel business,” just like that, a Dexter prequel was born. Phillips quickly pitched it, and McCarthy’s four-word response sealed the deal: “Phenomenal. I love it.”
