From 草履 (zōri, Japanese thonged sandal) +‎ (mushi, worm). Compare Chinese 草履蟲 / 草履虫 (cǎolǚchóng), Korean 짚신벌레 (jipsinbeolle, literally Korean straw sandal worm), Vietnamese trùng giày (literally shoe worm), trùng đế giày (literally shoe sole worm).
