Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's film "It Ends With Us," based on the bestselling 2016 novel by Colleen Hoover, became an enormous box office sensation when it hit theaters in August 2024. It's also been the source of some serious drama behind the scenes that has seemingly spiraled out of control (and resulted in a few lawsuits), but I'll circle back to that later. For the uninitiated, what is "It Ends With Us" about? Is it appropriate for young audiences? (No, it's not; I'll also circle back to that shortly.)
The story focuses on Lily Blossom Bloom (Lively), a particularly aptly-named young woman who dreams of opening a flower shop in Boston and meets hot-tempered neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid one night while she's loitering on a random rooftop in the Massachusetts capital. Despite Lily's initial hesitance, she and Ryle hit...

The highly anticipated film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends With Us” is now streaming on Netflix after first hitting theaters this summer, and it’s got a star-studded cast.
After initial announcements of Blake Lively playing the 23-year-old Lily Bloom, fans of the book weren’t convinced that Justin Baldoni’s adaptation would live up to the hype. Baldoni, who plays Lily’s love interest, Ryle, also directed and produced the film with his production company Wayfarer.
Both Hoover and Baldoni publicly stated that it was a joint decision to age up the characters, and one they hoped would make the story of domestic violence more universally accessible to a greater range of women.
“When we chose to partner with Sony and turn this into a major motion picture, obviously you need a movie star, [Lively] was one of the first names that was brought up, and all of...

Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively’s movie “It Ends With Us” is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel by the same name, which the author has said is based on her mother’s marriage.
The movie is the first cinematic adaptation of any of Hoover’s books.
Baldoni optioned the movie through his company Wayfarer Studios in 2019, but he told TheWrap that he always knew he wouldn’t be able to make the film alone. “No matter how much research, or how many women I talk to, or how much I try to empathize or even get into the mind and heart of my wife, I’ll never be able to understand what that experience is like. I knew that going in,” he explained.

The gossip started earlier this week. Amid the press blitz for the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling romantic drama-slash-domestic violence cautionary tale It Ends With Us, fans started to notice something seemed amiss. Note: Spoilers ahead for “It Ends With Us”
In any book-to-screen adaptation, changes are going to be made, and plot points are likely to get cut. That remains true for “It Ends With Us,” but the filmmakers opted for a pretty major change to the story’s ending.
The new Sony film, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s book of the same name and in theaters now, tells the story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a florist who falls in love with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni). As their relationship develops, it quickly turns sinister as it becomes clear that Ryle is physically abusive.
Lily has spent her life determined not to end up in a relationship like this, because her mother was consistently abused by her father, yet chose to stay with him. It broke Lily in a lot of ways, and she confided in her high school sweetheart Atlas about it all.

It’s only been a couple of weeks since the Summer’s biggest box office smash, y’know those two “fightin’ friends” from the MCU, so it feels a bit odd that a very serious “issue” drama based on a best seller is dropping into the multiplexes. Really, shouldn’t this be an “awards contender” for the much cooler Fall months? Well, literary adaptations other than the “YA” franchises do often get a Summertime release (two years ago Where The Crawdads Sing arrived that July). And this film does star the wife of one of the aforementioned Marvel spandex-wearing icons. Can she lure away some of the Summer cinema crowds as the novel’s heroine who declares It Ends With US?
Oh, the actress mentioned above is Blake Lively, who plays the story’s “main focus”, thirty-something Lily Bloom. We first encounter her as she drives back into her family...

Following the New York premiere of It Ends With Us on Tuesday evening, the first reviews of the film from critics have been coming in, and they’ve been decidedly mixed.
The romantic drama, based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 best-selling novel of the same name, was directed by Justin Baldoni (who also plays Ryle). Consider the source. Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends with Us” is a bestselling love-and-trauma women’s fiction title built on a massive fan base. With the movie adaptation opening Friday, it’s back at #1 on the Amazon Charts after 118 weeks on the list. It has 335, 654 ratings and counting. For context, Booker Prize Longlist title Percival Everett’s “James,” considered one of the best books of 2024, has 13,105 ratings. The difference is 25 to 1.

“Soap opera” is a term that conjures cliché images. In hindsight it’s a rather sexist phrase, like the studio-system category of “women’s pictures.” Soap operas have always dealt, at times in depth, with women’s experiences. When the phrase came into vogue, in the 1960s, soap operas were what housewives watched on network television in the afternoon (I’d watch my mother get absorbed into them). One of the many ways that they were unfairly sneered at is that the culture gave no credibility to the fact that soap operas were a serial form, which allowed them to slip into the nuances of a dramatic situation. Sure, they featured broad acting and a certain mannequin-model handsomeness and beauty, yet they gripped people — mostly women — because there was something vital and alive in them.

In this day and age, a serious topic like that would seem like it deserves a serious movie, one that telegraphs the importance of its subject matter.
This does not do that. The movie is as frothy as it is melodramatic; as much concerned with romance as it is with trauma. Throughout its over-two-hour run time,...

It’s fitting that we meet Lily Bloom, the charming but thinly written protagonist of It Ends With Us, marching out of a church. Beneath the surface of wide-eyed smiles and laughs lies a steely resolve. The young woman drove from Boston to her hometown in Maine for her father’s funeral. The event turned out to be a tense affair, one that ends with Lily, tasked with delivering the eulogy, leaving the service altogether. Despite her mother’s earlier pleas, the young woman has no kind words to say about her father. She can’t list five things she liked about him.
The root of this tension becomes clearer later on in this serviceable adaptation of the popular Colleen Hoover novel, directed by and co-starring Justin Baldoni (Jane the Virgin). But until then, Lily (Blake Lively) tends to her new-ish life in Boston. This involves opening the flower shop...

Justin Baldoni’s “It Ends with Us” certainly isn’t trying to conceal the story laid bare in the film’s trailer — all of it based on the 2016 bestseller by Colleen Hoover that was a smash amongst the BookTok faithful — leading to some delicate choices to keep things moving and interesting over the course of more than two hours of running time. Armed with a script by “Daddio” filmmaker Christy Hall, “It Ends with Us” manages to sensitively handle its delicate subject matter, though largely at the cost of a more intricate narrative.
The film begins with Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a New England florist who connects instantly with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid. Their first interaction on a Boston rooftop is almost a meet-cute — except that Lily’s dad died just a few days prior, and Ryle’s carrying his...

American Rust has been canceled for a second time. Prime Video has opted not to renew the drama starring Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney for a third season, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes four months after Season 2, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, premiered on the platform and had a quiet run.
The cancellation was foreshadowed by the recent casting of Tierney as a new series regular on NBC’s Law & Order.
American Rust has a long history. It initially was ordered straight-to-series at USA Network in November 2017, but a few months later, the network opted not to move forward with it. At the time, sources said the order was contingent on the producers finding a big star for the lead, which didn’t happen. It then moved to Showtime, with Daniels attached to star and executive produce, where it was picked up and aired for one season. The...

American Rust is set in a fictional town in the Rust Belt of Pennsylvania. Nearly all scenes were filmed in Pittsburgh, with some suburbs used for select shots. Buell symbolizes the decline of the American Dream, making it a crucial element in the series.
A small Rust Belt town plays a significant role in American Rust, but the show itself was all filmed in a bigger city. The crime drama series, created by Dan Futterman, is based on Philipp Meyer's 2009 novel of the same name, which revolves around the decline of the American middle class (and the American Dream) in the early 2000s in a rural town in Pennsylvania. Whereas American Rust undoubtedly shines a light on economic and social problems that several people went through in the late 20th and early 21st century, the show also pulls viewers in with a mystery.

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.

That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.
