The origin is unknown. This ending displaced -ast, the original second person singular preterite indicative first-conjugation ending, from Latin -āvistī, which in turn came from a combination of -āv- (the regular perfect infix for the first conjugation) and -istī (the second person singular present perfect active indicative ending).
