[edit]From Proto-Brythonic *Iwerðon, from Proto-Celtic *Φīweryū (compare Cornish Iwerdhon, Breton Iwerzhon, Old Irish Ériu, Middle Welsh Iwerð (“Irish Sea”)), from Proto-Indo-European *piHweryon-, from *piHwer- (“fat”) (compare Ancient Greek πίειρα (píeira, “fertile”), Sanskrit पीवर (pī́vara, “fat, plump, robust”)). Doublet of Iwerydd (“Atlantic”).
